Turns out, it WAS the driveshaft rear U-joint.
Got it all apart, and it was seized in one direction . Bought a new (reman-ed) one, and got it in yesterday (+ an oil change today) and it rides smooth as glass and there’s no more jarring jolt when shifting from R to D
Feels so damn good (minus my wallet) to have this thing run the way it should. Now (knock on wood) no more repairs for at least a few months.
Tried filming the whole thing on a go-pro chest mount, so TBD on a video

Wow I bet my (85) Jaguar has the same problem. It’s particularly bad at 55 mph but there’s at least some vibration at almost any speed. Course I’ve logged over 10k and it’s been that way since I bought it. Amazing it hasn’t g renaded yet I suppose.

Worth checking out. It took me a while to nail this down

Congrats! I fought with the driveshaft and center support bearing on my first E46. Never had to do it to my second one, thankfully.

I think I combined the job with post-cat O2 sensors and a short shift kit because...while you’re in there project creep

how were the post-cat sensors? I honestly thought I was going to end up destroying mine w/ how hard we had to bang + drill + torch the damn cat to exhaust bolts, but no CEL’s yet.
